چکیده

Article History Received 25 / 12 / 2012 Accepted 22 / 01 / 2013 Nonunion may be encountered, though occasionally, following fixation of long bone (such as tibia) fractures with an intramedullary nail. Despite availability of several treatment options in such situations, none seems to be ideal. In this study, we reported a case with aseptic tibia nonunion which was treated with Ilizarov external fixator over the intramedullary nail, which is a relatively novel modality with few studies available, and we proposed the method as an effective one with emphasis on further studies to explore the method.

Treatment of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia with the Ilizarov technique. Case report and review of the literature.

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia continues to pose one of the most difficult problems in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. The surgical procedures most used for treating congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia are intramedullary nailing associated with bone grafting, vascularized fibular graft and the Ilizarov external circular fixator. Even when union is achieved, the residual deformities i...

Nonunion of the humerus after failure of surgical treatment. Management using the Ilizarov circular fixator.

We used the Ilizarov circular external fixator to treat 16 patients with persistent nonunion of the diaphysis of the humerus despite surgical treatment. All patients had pain and severe functional impairment of the affected arm. In ten, nonunion followed intramedullary nailing. We successfully treated these by a closed technique. The nail was left in place and the fracture compressed over it. T...

The effectiveness of the circular external fixator in the treatment of post-traumatic of the tibia nonunion.

Authors report the results they obtained when the Ilizarov circular external fixator was used for the treatment of post-traumatic nonunion of the tibia. A total of 20 patients were treated. Of these 12 had been submitted to treatment elsewhere and using other methods; 9 presented with septic nonunion; 10 revealed radiographic findings of atrophic nonunion, and 10 were hypertrophic. There was ax...

Ilizarov external fixator for length salvage in infected amputated nonunions.

The technique of compression distraction induced osteogenesis via the Ilizarov external fixator system has been used for a variety of traumatic limb pathologies that necessitate boney union and limb preservation. In this case report, we describe an uncommon scenario were an Ilizarov external fixator was used to treat an infected nonunion following a below knee amputation.
